A COMMUNITY SHED FOR MORETONHAMPSTEAD and surrounding villages

Have you heard of the “Men’s Sheds” movement? Originally aimed at improving the mental health and physical wellbeing of men, the Sheds (or Workshops) have been springing up all over the country, and beyond.

Often when people retire, they suddenly find themselves at home with no involvement, commitment, or friendships like those they had at work. Retirees have a wealth of life experiences and skills which can be put to great use even in retirement.

There are over 30 Sheds in Devon, which have been successful at providing a meeting place for men to get together to do light work and meet new friends. Men’s Sheds is about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter over a cuppa.

It is much more than a social club with tools and craftwork. We hope to meet up with other Shedders throughout County and also network to the wider community. Hopefully you will often meet fellow shedders outside of the session times and generally support each other.

Whatever the activity, the essence of a Shed is not a building, but the connections and relationships between its members.

Although there could be specific days just for men, we would like ours to serve the whole community regardless of age or gender. The aim is to fit out a workshop for learning and practising activities such as

  • Carpentry

  • Metal working

  • Tool maintenance

  • DIY skills

  • Furniture making / repair

  • Cycle maintenance

This would vary according to the skills of the members who use it.

When we open our Community Workshop behind the old BT substation in Moretonhampstead, we will use it for projects that benefit the community, making, repairing and selling items, and raising funds for local charitable causes.
