Food Hub for North East Dartmoor

We understand that concerns about food insecurity and access to healthy, affordable food affects many people.

That’s why we have a two-year plan to deliver a service focused on supporting fair access to healthy food for everyone. By linking with Moretonhampstead Food Club, Knead to Connect, the primary school and the community allotment, we’ll be looking to increase access to affordable and healthy food.

As part of this ongoing project, we’ll be aiming to:

  1. Increase awareness of locally produced, nutritious and seasonal food.

  2. Transform the Moretonhampstead Parish Hall kitchen to become a Community Kitchen

  3. Use the Parish Hall as a base for a new Food Hub, which will be one of five food hubs working collaboratively across Devon

  4. Work with Moretonhampstead Primary School, as well as wider rural primary schools to create nutritious breakfast clubs

  5. Develop a new family space at Wellmoor’s Community Allotment, led by youth groups and schools in the area

  6. Support Knead to Connect in enhancing their Food Club offer, engage with more people and encourage healthy eating

  7. Provide opportunities for skills development, employment and support for vulnerable groups as part of this project

Want to get involved?

Come along to the Moretonhampstead Food Club on Thursday mornings 9:00 - 11:00am. You can get a bag of fresh shopping for only £5 and get to join in our free food tasters, where we bring along a new recipe each week to taste, and give you a new recipe to take home with you,

We also always welcome new volunteers to support the Food Club, the primary school or the community allotment - just give us a call on 01647 478 378 or email penny@wellmoor.org.uk to find out more.

Setting up a Community Kitchen

Between August and October 2025, we helped the Parish Hall run a Crowdfunder to raise funds for the revamp of their kitchen. Thanks to your generosity, you absolutely smashed the target of £10,000, which means the Parish Hall has been able to work on the renovation, with donations going towards the costs of new white goods, work surfaces, boilers, ovens, and more.

The revamped space will open up exciting opportunities, including cooking clubs, classes, and catering for events. It will also serve everyone who uses the Parish Hall, whether you’re a local business, a community group, or an individual.
