Supporting Unpaid Carers:
Resources, Community, and Wellbeing
Caring for a loved one is a noble and often challenging journey. At Wellmoor, we recognise the dedication and sacrifices of unpaid carers and are committed to providing support, resources, and a sense of community.
We’re working with carers from all walks of life, all ages and needs, to lend a hand and find ways to relieve some of the pressures of caring.
Ed’s Story…
peer support for Young adult carers
We're working closely with carers aged 18–24 to listen to their experiences and build supportive peer networks. If you're a young adult carer in Devon, we're setting up free support groups where you can connect with others who understand what you're going through.
Interested in joining a group?
Get in touch with Katie at katie@wellmoor.org.uk or call 01647 478378 - we'd love to hear from you.
Unpaid carer cancer awareness
Starting March 2025, we're partnering with Ottery Help Scheme to host relaxed, welcoming events for carers and the people they care for.
These sessions offer a chance to take a break, connect with fellow carers, and enjoy some time out together. We’ll also be raising awareness about the importance of looking after your own health, with expert speakers sharing advice on recognising early signs and symptoms of cancer.
Carers are eligible for free flu vaccines — are you protected?
As a carer, looking after your own health is just as important as caring for someone else. You may be entitled to a free flu vaccine, and we’re encouraging all carers to take up this offer to help protect both yourself and the person you care for.
Contact your GP in the autumn or winter to find out more and book your vaccine.
Fit to care: free exercise for unpaid carers
October 2024 – April 2025
We know that caring for someone else often leaves little time to care for yourself. That’s why we’re offering free 6-week physical activity programmes designed specifically for unpaid carers.
Funded by Sport England, these classes include:
Gentle yoga
Strength & balance exercises
Creative movement
Held in friendly, accessible community venues across Moretonhampstead, Crediton, Exminster, and Okehampton, these sessions are open to carers — and you’re welcome to bring the person you care for along too.
Our aim is simple: to support your physical and mental wellbeing while giving you a chance to connect with others who understand what it’s like to be a carer.
