Supporting Unpaid Carers
Resources, Community, and Wellbeing
Caring for a loved one is a noble and often challenging journey. At Wellmoor, we recognise the dedication and sacrifices of unpaid carers and are committed to providing support, resources, and a sense of community.
We’re working with carers from all walks of life, all ages and needs, to lend a hand and find ways to relieve some of the pressures of caring.
Unpaid carer cancer awareness
In March and April 2025, we hosted a series of cancer awareness events specifically for unpaid carers across East Devon. Delivered in partnership with Ottery Help Scheme, Community Links SW, and Honiton Carers, the sessions welcomed a total of 118 attendees.
These events provided a valuable opportunity for carers to hear from cancer experts about how to recognise the early signs and symptoms of cancer. The sessions also offered space for social connection, shared experiences, and refreshments in a relaxed, supportive environment.
One attendee shared, "It’s great to have a session like this to talk openly about cancer symptoms and connect with other carers."
By raising awareness and offering practical information in a friendly setting, we hope to support carers in looking after both their own health and the wellbeing of those they care for.

Peer support for Young adult carers
We're working closely with carers aged 18–24 to listen to their experiences and build supportive peer networks. If you're a young adult carer in Devon, we're setting up free support groups where you can connect with others who understand what you're going through.
Interested in joining a group?
Get in touch with Katie at katie@wellmoor.org.uk or call 01647 478378 - we'd love to hear from you.
Carers are eligible for free flu vaccines — are you protected?
As a carer, looking after your own health is just as important as caring for someone else. You may be entitled to a free flu vaccine, and we’re encouraging all carers to take up this offer to help protect both yourself and the person you care for.
Contact your GP in the autumn or winter to find out more and book your vaccine.
Fit to care: free exercise for unpaid carers
October 2024 – July 2025
We know that caring for someone else often leaves little time to care for yourself. That’s why we’re offering free 6-week physical activity programmes designed specifically for unpaid carers.
Funded by Sport England, these classes include:
Gentle yoga
Strength & balance exercises
Creative movement
Held in friendly, accessible community venues across Moretonhampstead, Crediton, Exminster, and Okehampton, these sessions are open to carers - and you’re welcome to bring the person you care for along too.
Our aim is simple: to support your physical and mental wellbeing while giving you a chance to connect with others who understand what it’s like to be a carer.
Our next sessions will take place in Ottery St Mary in June. Want to join us or find out more?
