Check-Mate

Wellmoor has developed a new project called Check-Mate to raise awareness about men’s mental health in the North Dartmoor and Okehampton area. We are launching in an awareness-raising campaign in the spring to signpost services and support that is available both locally and regionally.

We know there are a number of factors that affect people with mental health problems in our rural community. Issues around anonymity in small rural communities and perceived stigma may affect the recognition, treatment and maintenance of mental health problems for people in rural areas. With mental health support tending to centre in urban areas, rural communities can suffer from limited provision of support services.

Men are at particular threat in rural areas. Men are 3 times more likely than women to commit suicide, and suicide is now the leading cause of death for men under 50. Studies have shown that men in rural areas are less likely than men in urban areas to reach out for support or talk to someone if they are struggling with their mental health. Locally suicide rates are consistently higher than the national average.

We need an intervention that targets men in rural industries to reduce stigma, increase conversation around mental health and signpost to available resources.

UP-COMING EVENT

ANDY’S MAN CLUB -coming to Okehampton

Public Meeting 27th February 6.30-8.30pm at Cafe Castle Hams, Okehampton

If you are interested, concerned or have personal experience in Men’s Mental Health please come along.

Wellmoor’s Check-Mate project and West Devon CVS are working together to set-up an Andy’s Man Club in Okehampton. The male suicide rate in the Okehampton and North Dartmoor area is worryingly high. Andy’s Man Club is a national organisation that runs over 160 free weekly support groups across the country, providing a space for men where they can open up about the storms affecting their lives in a judgement-free and non-clinical environment.

For more information contact torie@wellmoor.org.uk or call 01647 478378.
